It is widely acknowledged that Nigeria’s youth population sits precariously at over 55% of the total population. Why precarious? It is precarious because in the times we live now, where high unemployment rates and misplaced priorities are the norm, rather than exception, where impatience and greed seem to have become a virtue rather than flaw, there is much cause for concern. And necessarily so, when the sheer amount of young unemployed young people with limited scope of knowledge and skills are taken into account.
Without a doubt, this country’s youth population boasts some of the most original curative’s in the world. Given the right tools and environment, Nigerian youths can compete at the highest levels in various industries and exceed expectations.
The UNESCO Read and Earn Federation finds it paramount that meaningful enrichment and sustainable programmes should be put in place towards the renaissance of three identified critical areas among the youth, which are;
- Intellectual Capacity Building; intellectual renaissance is paramount among young Nigerians and can be achieved with meaningful and complete enrichment programmes. Because the illiterates of the 21st century are not just those who can’t read and write only; but also comprises those who cannot unlearn the many lies they have been conditioned to believe and to seek out the hidden knowledge that they have been conditioned to reject.
- Leadership Capacity Building and
- Economic Capacity Building
These three critical areas of improvement are entrenched in the ten-year UNESCO TAP Project, launched in Nigeria, for Nigerian youth; and to be delivered digitally to 120,000 Nigerian youth per year. UTP is programmed to run for ten years, influencing a whole generation of young Nigerians. By providing internationally-recognized bespoke programme content designed by subject matter experts in partnership with the United Kingdom, world external validation and globally transportable certification and two international professional memberships with the Association of Business Executives and Institute of Leadership & Management, which will give the young people on the programme membership to its services as a professional body and provide access to its flagship e-learning tool, MyLeadership, for Nigerian youths who enroll in the UNESCO TAP Project. To continuing supporting their professional development in business leadership and build their capacity for leading the nation in the nearest future. According to the current ‘Business Stay-Up’ research, the practical skills to be acquired through the TAP project will empower the youths with required knowledge for growing high-impact sustainable businesses, measurable by actual wealth and job creation, and with an emphasis on international trade. With the United Kingdom oriented towards global emerging markets, and Nigeria’s ambition to harness its massive youth population to become an independent economic powerhouse; aligned with United Nations Sustainable Developmental goals 4) Quality Education; and 8) Decent work and Economic growth. Recent liberalization has attracted private investment on a scale unprecedented for Africa, and like much of the continent there has been a boom in widespread, low-cost mobile services, and Smartphone ownership, which is improving access to education, banking and public services.
Combining a laser-focus on objectives, with world class learning content, digital delivery and ensuring strong partner relations, with relevant stakeholders, we’re confident that the UNESCO TAP -Project will produce a generation of entrepreneurs, helping Nigeria to take its place in the global economy.
It is our hope that this very timely project will enlighten Nigerian youths about the dynamics of international markets, exposing them to globally recognized and proven wealth creation strategies, and doubtlessly, satisfying the ambition of president Buhari’s administration to making Nigeria an economic powerhouse.
Nigeria needs all her young people, and she needs them wise in the business ways of the world. Creativity and innovation remain the hallmarks of thriving nations in today’s world; No one is coming to save her. She owes herself the rescue and the salvation. UTP aim to relaunch the authority of originality in enterprise and to encourage the intersection of fresh ideas, “the sex of ideas” as Matt Ridley puts it in his book, The Rational Optimist; because today’s marketplace frustration and hard-to-till entrepreneurial land is tomorrow’s street anger and restlessness.
Finally, UNESCO’s medium term strategies urge for a sustainable development process to building strategic partnerships both at global and national levels in line with the Paris declaration for Aid effectiveness and UNESCO’s Operational strategy on youth allowing us and our partners to benefits from numerous different perspectives and area of expertise for easy attainment of United Nations global goals and counting on the support of those that have the interest in the future development of Nigerian youths and the country as a whole to consider this as a call to action.
