Programme Completion Credential

Graduates who satisfy all assessment requirements receive a Lichfield ARDAI Certificate of Professional Competency and are registered in the Lichfield ARDAI Registry, a professional record of verified AI competency maintained by The Lichfield Partners and Associates.

Philosophy and Rationale

Why this programme exists, what distinguishes it from academic AI instruction, and the principles governing its design.

The Advanced Research Diploma in Artificial Intelligence (TIER I) was designed in response to a gap that is both urgent and consequential: the absence of a rigorous, practice-centred programme that equips senior practitioners and institutional leaders with the AI competency required to govern, deploy, and evaluate artificial intelligence systems responsibly.

ARDAI is not an academic qualification programme. It does not seek to confer academic credentials or credit hours in the manner of a university degree. It is a professional capacity-building programme of the highest intellectual standard, designed to meet the demands that artificial intelligence now places on institutions, leaders, and practitioners across every sector of public and private life. Its intellectual standard is set by the evidence base, the scholarly literature, and the governance challenges it engages, not by the status of the institution delivering it.

The programme proceeds from three foundational convictions. First, that AI competency is no longer optional for any institutional leader operating at the level this programme targets: senior public and private sector officials, government officials at directorial level and above, institutional leaders and decision-makers whose work shapes the systems, policies, and institutions that affect millions of people. Second, that genuine competency requires engagement with the technical foundations of AI, not merely its policy surface. Third, that AI governance in Africa requires frameworks that emerge from African institutional realities, African legal systems, and African development priorities, not frameworks transplanted from high-income country contexts and applied without adaptation.

Each of the 13 weeks culminates in a laboratory assignment of publication or submission quality. The programme's assessment philosophy holds that knowledge that cannot be demonstrated cannot be hired, commissioned, or trusted with public responsibility. Every graded deliverable in ARDAI is designed to function simultaneously as a learning task and as an evidence artefact for the practitioner's professional portfolio.

§ 04

Assessment Framework

A rigorous, evidence-based assessment philosophy. Every graded deliverable is simultaneously a learning task and a professional portfolio artefact.

ARDAI employs a multi-component assessment architecture designed to build, test, and certify competency at every stage of the learning journey. Assessment is not a formality at the end of the programme: it is woven into every lesson, every week, and every domain. The framework is built on a single governing principle: knowledge you cannot demonstrate cannot be hired, commissioned, or trusted with public responsibility.

The programme culminates in a Final Examination taken upon completion of all 13 weeks. The examination result determines the level of the graduate's Lichfield ARDAI Certificate of Professional Competency. The four-level grading framework below applies to the Final Examination. Graduates who do not achieve a Pass are required to resit; those who do not pass on resit do not receive a certificate.

Distinction

85 – 100

Mastery-level performance in the Final Examination. Demonstrates precise contextual grounding, methodological rigour, and expert-scrutiny-resistant reasoning across all programme domains. Distinction graduates are invited to submit their capstone portfolio to The REF Review.

Merit

70 – 84

All examination components addressed with accuracy and strong contextual specificity. Demonstrates confident command of all six programme domains with minor gaps in precision or depth.

Pass

50 – 69

Satisfactory performance across all examination components. Demonstrates the required level of competency across all six programme domains.

Below Pass

0 – 49

Insufficient performance in the Final Examination. The practitioner must resit. A maximum of two resit attempts are permitted. Practitioners who do not achieve a Pass on resit will not receive a certificate and are required to repeat the programme.

Component I

Knowledge Checks

Each lesson includes a formative knowledge check designed to test conceptual understanding before progression. Not graded. Expert analysis is revealed upon completion, supporting learning without penalising exploration. The knowledge checks prepare the practitioner for the Final Examination.

Component II

Voice Lectures

Every lesson includes a narrated audio lecture. Practitioners read and listen simultaneously, enabling deeper engagement with complex material and reinforcing comprehension across different learning styles. Voice Lectures are an inclusive design feature, not optional supplementary content.

Component III

Laboratory Work Samples

Each of the 169 lessons includes a laboratory assignment. This is not an exercise: it is a work sample. The practitioner who completes a lab to a publishable standard has a concrete, demonstrable professional deliverable. Submit completed labs to [email protected] with the subject line: ARDAI Lab Week (N) Lesson (N) — (Full Name) — (Institution). Labs are reviewed by programme mentors and included in the practitioner's portfolio record.

Component IV

Weekly Capstone Submissions

Each of the 13 weeks concludes with a Capstone Submission: a summative, integrative deliverable synthesising the week's learning into a single publication-standard piece of work. The Week 13 Capstone is the programme's final portfolio submission, submitted before the practitioner sits the Final Examination.

Examination and Resit Policy: The Final Examination is sat upon completion of all 13 weeks and all Capstone Submissions. A maximum of two resit attempts are permitted for practitioners who do not achieve a Pass. Practitioners who do not achieve a Pass on their second resit will not be awarded a Lichfield ARDAI Certificate of Professional Competency and will be required to repeat the programme in full. There is no pathway to certification through Below Pass performance.

Programme Bonus — Three-Day CPP in AI Tools

All ARDAI students receive complimentary access to the Certificate of Professional Practice in AI Tools (CPP): a standalone three-day masterclass in applied AI tools for research and professional practice. The CPP is designed for immediate implementation, delivering practical, deployable skills from day one. It is issued separately upon programme completion as a standalone credential.

The CPP ensures that every ARDAI graduate leaves not only with strategic and analytical competency, but with the applied tool fluency to put that competency to work immediately.

The REF Review — Biannual Academic Journal

ARDAI graduates who achieve Distinction are invited to submit their Week 13 capstone research portfolio to The REF Review, the peer-reviewed biannual journal of the Read and Earn Federation for UNESCO. ISSN registration in progress.

Publication in The REF Review transforms the capstone from a programme deliverable into a contribution to the scholarly record, giving ARDAI graduates a peer-reviewed publication credential at the point of programme completion.

ARDAI is designed as a fully inclusive programme. Its accessibility architecture is built into the platform from the ground up.

Switches to Lexend, a typeface clinically designed for reading ease. Increases line spacing, letter spacing, and word spacing. Adds gentle background tinting to reduce contrast glare. Activated from the accessibility panel, preserved across sessions.

Disables all animations, transitions, pulsing effects, and flashing elements site-wide. Reduces video brightness and saturation. A persistent safe-mode banner confirms activation. Compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA and WCAG 2.3 photosensitivity provisions.

Autism and Sensory Sensitivity Mode

Replaces the high-contrast gold palette with a calm, muted blue-grey scheme. Eliminates visual noise and decorative effects. Body text is reset to a clear sans-serif typeface. Structure is simplified and made fully predictable throughout the lesson interface.

International Framework: Treaty and Convention Basis

UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021): Adopted by all 193 UNESCO Member States. Calls for AI systems that are inclusive, equitable, and accessible, explicitly mandating attention to persons with disabilities and those at risk of exclusion from AI benefits. ARDAI's accessibility architecture directly implements this obligation.
UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD, 2006): Article 9 (Accessibility) and Article 24 (Education) require State Parties to ensure equal access to education for persons with disabilities, including through reasonable accommodations. ARDAI's three accessibility modes operationalise this right within a professional education context.
UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education: Target 4.5 commits to eliminating disparities and ensuring equal access to education for persons with disabilities and those in vulnerable situations. ARDAI's self-paced, fully online, accessibility-first design embodies this target.
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1 AA and WCAG 2.3): The programme platform is built to WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance with WCAG 2.3 photosensitivity provisions, implementing three distinct accessibility modes activated from the persistent accessibility panel. These are the international technical standards referenced by the EU Web Accessibility Directive and equivalent frameworks.
African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (1981), Banjul Charter: Article 17 affirms the right to education. The AU Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa (2020 to 2030) calls for inclusive digital education at scale. ARDAI's African-centred curriculum and accessibility architecture align with these continental commitments.

Beyond assistive technology, ARDAI's inclusivity commitment extends to its curriculum content. The programme is designed specifically for the realities of African institutional practice, African legal systems, and African development priorities. It treats African institutional knowledge as the primary analytical frame, from which global comparisons are drawn as needed.

The programme is fully self-paced and asynchronous, removing the barriers of fixed schedules, time-zone disadvantage, and the competing demands of senior professional life. There are no cohort start dates and no enrolment deadlines. A Commissioner of Police in Abuja, a Director at the African Development Bank in Abidjan, and a Ministry official in Nairobi can all proceed through the same programme at the pace their professional responsibilities permit, without penalty.

ARDAI is designed in alignment with the leading international frameworks governing AI ethics, education, and professional competency.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

The programme is designed in alignment with the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021): the only global normative instrument on AI ethics: and the UNESCO Framework for AI Competency for Students and Teachers. ARDAI's African-centred curriculum reflects UNESCO's commitment to culturally grounded AI education.

OECD

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

The programme's governance curriculum aligns with the OECD AI Principles (2019): the first intergovernmental standard on AI: covering inclusive growth, human-centred values, transparency, robustness, and accountability. OECD AI Principle implementation is a substantive thread across Weeks 8, 9, 10, and 12.

EU AI Act

European Union Artificial Intelligence Act (2024)

The EU AI Act: the world's first comprehensive AI regulatory framework: is a primary reference for the Week 12 regulatory design curriculum. Practitioners are trained to evaluate and adapt EU-derived regulatory instruments for African institutional and legal contexts.

NIST

National Institute of Standards and Technology: AI Risk Management Framework

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0, 2023) provides the technical risk governance vocabulary engaged in ARDAI's safety and alignment curriculum (Week 9) and policy design curriculum (Week 12), adapted for African institutional capacity contexts.

AU / AUDA-NEPAD

African Union and AU Development Agency: AI Continental Strategy

The AU's Continental AI Strategy and the AUDA-NEPAD Digital Transformation Strategy provide the African policy architecture within which ARDAI's governance, policy, and applied domain curricula are framed. African AI governance is treated as the primary, not peripheral, analytical context.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, W3C

ARDAI (Advanced Research Diploma in Artificial Intelligence) is a programmatic framework under the Strategic Intervention Programme for Accelerated Learning and Productive Human Asset (SIP-ALPHA). SIP-ALPHA is the flagship programme of UNESCO REF and sets the overarching standards for programme quality, mentorship structure, and graduate recognition across all its constituent programmes.

Programme Oversight

The vetting panel's mandate is to assess the programme's intellectual rigour, the adequacy of its assessment framework, the appropriateness of its African-centred curriculum design, and the programme's alignment with international standards for professional AI capacity building. The panel's findings inform any revisions to the curriculum and the programme's formal positioning within international professional development frameworks.

The Lichfield Academy operates under the convening authority of The Lichfield Partners and Associates, the Strategic Partner of SIP-ALPHA. The programme's governance structure is clearly defined: curriculum design and academic standards sit with The Lichfield Academy; portfolio management, registry, and strategic delivery sit with The Lichfield Partners and Associates; originating authority and normative framework alignment sit with UNESCO REF.
